Recipe: Schmorgurken: Cucumber stew from East Germany

This is an inspiration from my friend in Germany, who lives just at the frontier with Poland. I guided my self with a recipe through  They say it is a dish that was served when there was limit of choices on food. The taste is simple, kids love it and has a nostalgic feeling to it.

6 small cucumbers or 3 big ones.

little onions, chopped

little bacon, sliced

1TBSP cornstarch, just to thicken the sauce (mixed with little cold water)

salt, pepper

vegetable stock

boiled potatoes (for the ganiture)

1 TBSP vinegar


1. in little oil, caramelize the onions, then add the bacon, mix.

2. add the cucumbers (peeled, take out the seeds and slice), mix.

3. add some vegetable stock, vinegar, salt, pepper. cover and cook for about 15 to 15 minutes in low heat.

4. add cornstarch
